At its meeting on 28 and 29 September 2009 , the PPAN (Particle Physics, Astronomy and Nuclear Physics) Committee undertook a prioritisation process using the decision making criteria developed following the STFC strategy consultation. The projects under consideration were those not previously considered during the 2007/08 STFC Programmatic Review.
To facilitate this prioritisation, PPAN received completed proformas from each project under consideration and advice from the five advisory panels: Particle Physics Advisory Panel (PPAP), Particle Astrophysics Advisory Panel (PAAP), Nuclear Physics Advisory Panel (NPAP), Far Universe Advisory Panel (FUAP) and Near Universe Advisory Panel (NUAP). PPAN also took advice from the draft report of the Astronomy Ground-Based Facilities Review. PPAN thanked the Advisory Panels for their hard work and noted the vital input of the community in engaging with this process.
Taking full account of the advice from the Advisory Panels, PPAN produced an initial prioritisation of projects into three ranking groups based upon alpha ranking. This was reported to the Science Board meeting on 19 and 20 October where PPAN received strategic guidance for the next stage in the prioritisation exercise. In light of this, at its forthcoming meeting PPAN will develop recommendations on the shape of the science programme for presentation to the December meeting of Science Board. This will include integrating the output from the current prioritisation with that from the 2007/08 Programmatic Review. The meeting will include further discussions with the Advisory Panel chairs.
PPAN’s advice to Science Board in terms of the ranking of projects will be published in due course.
