Statement on Nuclear Physics
In reference to a recent media report, STFC issued the following statement:
STFC statement on nuclear physics funding - 8 July 2008
The branch of nuclear physics that STFC supports is the investigation of the internal structure of the nucleus and the nuclear processes that take place in stars (nuclear astrophysics) and does not concern nuclear power or nuclear engineering, or the building or decommissioning of power stations.
None of the scientists or science projects supported by STFC concern nuclear power or nuclear engineering, or the building or decommissioning of power stations.
Nuclear engineering and nuclear power are supported by STFC's sister research council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
The volume of funding for nuclear physics announced by STFC today is not a significant reduction from previous years, but the distribution of funds has been adjusted
following peer review and consultation with the nuclear physics community
. The community supported
an increased emphasis on participation of the UK groups in their highest priority, the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Germany.
The claim that there is a 40% reduction in STFC support for nuclear physics is therefore incorrect.
