Note - no Large Awards round this year
Because of the STFC overall financial situation, we are not planning to run the annual round of Large Awards for public engagement this autumn. We would hope to resume this scheme in 2010. However, researchers who were interested in this scheme and have ideas for projects are strongly encouraged to telephone the Office (in the first instance, Chris Woolford, 01793 442098) to discuss their idea and see how STFC may be able to help.
The Large Awards Scheme provides funds for projects which are expected to have a significant regional or national impact. We offer awards from £15,000 up to £100,000. Almost anyone can apply but project teams must have strong links with the Science and Technology Facilities Council's scientific research community. We also encourage partnerships that may positively impact on the success of the project e.g. universities with science centres.
Recent successful awards have included funding toward a new gallery at the National Space Centre, Leicester, a tour of space-themed educational workshops around disadvantaged schools and a programme of summer activities at Jodrell Bank Observatory.
If your application is successfully short listed you will be informed by email before Christmas and will have to submit the stage 2 application form by late January. All applications for large awards, from all organisations whether academic or non-academic, will have to be submitted through the Je-S system. View instructions on how to do this.
Note for Universities and other Research Organisations:
The Large Awards Scheme now falls under the Full Economic Costs (fEC) framework. Consequently FEC organisations can apply for a maximum of £125,000 under this scheme as the actual amount of money that can be provided by STFC under this scheme is £100,000 or 80% of £125,000.
